Raising Awareness & Reducing Stroke Risk

October 29th is World Stroke Day!

The purpose of World Stroke Day is to increase education and propel action on stroke awareness around the world.  World Stroke Day is to bring understanding that stroke can affect anyone, of any age, at any time. Prevention of stroke and other brain impairments is an urgent need worldwide. Some signs of a stroke include sudden weakness or numbness, vision problems, difficulty walking, severe headache, and vision problems. Our goal is to support all patients, friends, and family in the consideration involved with strokes or transient ischemic attack (TIA) worldwide.

Did you know that oral diseases have been linked with age-related disorders such as stroke? Better management of oral hygiene and dental health can lead to reduced stroke risk. Gum disease or periodontal disease is associated with increased risk of stroke, myocardial infarction (MI) and death. These are prevalent conditions worldwide, at 90% worldwide and as much as 50% in the United States.

Among patients with recent stroke or TIA whom researchers screened for gum disease, periodontal disease was found in 40% of the population. Gingivitis and periodontitis are preventable and manageable conditions. Through regular hygiene cleanings and exams with a dental hygienist and dentist you can help manage your risk of stroke.
